Yasmeen Success Story

"No matter what you do, it will never amount to anything more than a single drop in a limitless ocean...before my experience with Youth in Government (YIG), I believed this quote to be true."

"As a teenager, I often feel powerless to make decisions in my life and for my community. I have finally reached a crossroad in my life. One part of me wants to remain a little girl, blind to the problems of the world, but the other wishes to take the path less travelled and makes a difference in society. The YIG gave me the chance to do so. Not only was I able to share my opinions and critiques on political issues, but I was given the opportunity to stand up for my own cause.  Unlike a typical school setting, I was able to choose the topic to argue in favor of. The bill I chose was related to the reformation of the foster care system, since shared with my teachers wanting to volunteer with foster children.

During the district conference, I was able to learn about the role of our government, while going through a mini simulation of the activities completed by the State representatives and senators. In that short three day experience, I learned more about the government than I ever could in a one year government course. Not only did I learn about government, but I understood that there could be a future place for politics in my life. Although my bill was not passed, I was voted as speaker of the Bowen House. Knowing that my peers respected my knowledge and speaking skills fuels my desire to one day become a politician or lawyer. No matter what I choose to become, I now realize that I have the strength to accomplish anything.

You may ask how YIG will impact my future plans. After the positive reaction to my foster care bill, I have decided to start a charitable organization to support orphaned children with their emotional literacy skills. I want to teach them how to best express themselves. The greatest tool you can give a child is the ability to persuade and speak with confidence. Being that my YIG experience positively impacted my emotional literacy skills, I would like to pass these on to those who are less fortunate.

So, while the world may be a limitless ocean, what is an ocean but a multitude of drops?

Each time we take a stand or argue an opinion we are creating ripples in the limitless ocean of society. These ripples have the power to improve lives. The ripples that we create will give birth to reactions that might not necessarily change humankind, but cause an even bigger phenomenon- getting a group of teenagers to actually enjoy learning about our political system. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in this program."
